India 1948 Gandhi 3½a overprinted SERVICE used on piece, cancelled “RASHTRAPATI BHAVAN P.O. / NAI DILLI 4 / 14 OCT 52” (native hindi cancel) cds. The Gandhi Service stamps were intended for use by the Governor’s Office, New Delhi. Lord Mountbatten, the then Governor General, handed over this post to Rajagopalachari who served as Governor-General of India from June 1948 until 26 January 1950. This stamp was used from the President’s office in 1952 which is extremely rare – possibly the only known Gandhi Official stamp to be used from this office – a great modern India rarity, especially for Gandhi collectors.
