India 1808 (Apr 10) Calcutta Bengal G.P.O. POST PAID HG SD2 on folded letter from Meerut (before the introduction of Meerut cancellor) to UK via Calcutta.
Contents state “I am at present lonely situated, the whole of the troops of this post (One Battn. N. Infy and my Regt.) being gone to the Hurdwar Fair ….. the largest in the known world but every thirteenth year and the present one ….. The prodigious concourse of people that assemble from Tartary, China, Persia, Madras & every part of Asia & even from Arabia & I am told from Russia is incredible, literally many millions. The Govt. are therefore obliged to send a strong force there to keep order & particularly on account of the Maillah – a religious Hindoo ceremony when 2 or 300 Hindoos generally cut each other’s throats in disputing a famous bathing place where the Holy Ganges first appears in Hindoostan
