India 1870 “MISSENT TO CALCUTTA” boxed in red on cover from Cape Town, endorsed “per Gondola” f.w. 4d (corner missing) correctly paying the rate to Fort William, Calcutta, redirected “per Steamer”, initially inscribed “Singapore”, which was deleted, and finally to Batavia. “SHIPLETTER CALCUTTA” (Aug 18) arrival cds in blue and thence “CALCUTTA INDIA PAID” (Aug 19) Cooper type 10 dispatch in blue. It finally arrived Batavia on Sep 16 and collected by the recipient paying the 20c due. An interesting inscription within the flap records the expected arrival of Ship Galatea in Cape Town, which was apparently sent by telegram.
